It was meant to be a simple business venture, but the stunning views and picturesque location were so seductive, plans changed quickly.

Musk Springs began 10 years ago when Michael Opie, managing director of Melbourne-based Big Wet Natural Spring Water, stumbled upon the idyllic town of Musk just outside of Daylesford while searching for a natural spring source.

Knowing the area was renowned for its pure water and natural springs he found exactly what he needed – a deep granite spring located on 50 acres of land.

What he wasn’t expecting was to fall in love with the sweeping views from his new property that stretched out over the Wombat State Forest. He quickly decided a weekend home was a must.

Fast-forward a decade and Michael and his family still regularly enjoy this three-bedroom family home perched at one of the highest points in Musk. Its isolation and natural surroundings make it the perfect escape and yet it is only a 10-minute drive to all the amenities of Daylesford.

Busy family life means he doesn’t get there as much as he would like, but is keen for others to settle in and enjoy everything both the property and the area has to offer.

A kitchen looks out over the open-plan living and dining area, while three bedrooms and two bathrooms offer privacy and comfort.

The highlight of the property, however, is the extensive outdoor deck, which provides an outdoor dining table, sitting area as well as a large above ground spa.

With young children, Michael wanted to ensure they had lots to do so he had a cubby house installed, complete with a sandpit and slide, and a fully enclosed trampoline, which adds to the large yard where kids can run around and kick the footy.

For Michael and his family, walks and bike rides along the dirt roads under the canopy of gum trees is a highlight as is popping down to nearby Passing Clouds Winery or having a meal at the Farmers’ Arm Pub.

With a full kitchen and plenty of space for entertaining, cooking at home is also a joy and with award-winning Istra Small Goods just down the road, not to mention a great Sunday market, meals with family and friends is always a highlight.

Of course, the spring water that flows out of the taps is an added bonus. It is the same water supplied to international beverage companies, so guests love filling up their water bottles from the tap.

For Michael, however, nothing tops an evening at Musk Springs like a soak in the spa watching what he has declared as one of the best sunsets in Australia.
