Busy parents and Optometrists, David and Emma, have always loved Daylesford. They have spent many afternoons enjoying a glass of wine at The Royal Hotel staring dreamily up Albert Street and commenting to each other how lovely it would be to own one of the gorgeous Victorian cottages that line the street.
After many years of watching the market and waiting patiently, their dream came true late last year when they purchased Albert Cottage. Being so close to the main street was a huge plus for them. They loved being able to walk everywhere with the kids and their beloved dog. As much as they wanted an escape for themselves from the busyness of Melbourne, they also wanted to create a getaway for others to enjoy where pets were also welcome.
The home needed some tender loving care and they got to work straight away on the inside as well as the garden. They enlisted help from Jessica of Dunbarlo Interiors to pull together and build on what they had already done and to curate the stunning pieces purchased from nearby Stony Creek Gallery. They loved the process of working with Jessica and seeing the place come together. Emma and David are so proud of what they have created.
We have really transformed this beautiful miners cottage. It combines the period features we all love, fire places, high ceilings, original floorboards etc., with modern features and clever styling and layering, it’s a space that everyone can enjoy.
The separate lounge with large flat screen TV is a great break away space for movie nights or board games, whilst the kitchen table is a great gathering spot for evening drinks and preparing special meals together. All bedrooms have king beds and two of the beds can split making it an ideal house for families, friends, couples, or girls getting away together for a spontaneous getaway or a special gathering planned in advance.
There is so much to do that is right on the doorstep of Albert Cottage, you can arrive, park the car and never have to get in it again for the rest of your stay. The family love this and enjoy having everything close at hand.
Emma reflects on what they love about the region.
Honestly, there is so much to be enjoyed here, the gorgeous lake, of course, The Boathouse restaurant and the paddle boats are our families favourite spots and activities. We also love the peaceful botanic gardens and stunning café located there. The shopping is something we also enjoy, there is an impressive range of new designer shops as well as vintage and curious markets and stores, there are literally days of exploring and finding special one-off pieces, especially at The Mill Market.
The wineries are also places they like to visit; a special day out involves a trip to the Sunday market with a train ride to Passing Clouds Winery for lunch, or a day lazing out at Lavendula Lavender farm. You truly do feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the Italian countryside where you can enjoy fine wine and lavender ice cream and watch your children climb the trees and play hide and seek. Then there are the obvious favourite spots of The Convent Gallery and the mineral springs, the list just goes on and on.
I really think we set destiny in motion that dreamy afternoon at The Royal. We are just so thrilled to have our little slice of heaven here in Daylesford and to be able to share it with others, it’s an honour and we truly hope that guests staying at Albert Cottage have a wonderful experience and relaxing getaway.
