Tell us something about your property? Is it a miners cottage, new build, villa or farm?
Mount Olive is estimated as a 1940’s home, unfortunately little is known about its history. We purchased the property in 2009 and spent around 18 months renovating before it was finally ready for our first guests. There are before and after photos available in an album at Mount Olive for guests to view the renovation journey.
What was your inspiration when creating your holiday home?
I knew that my husband Jamie was a gifted carpenter however, I didn’t quite realise the depths of his vision for the property until we started renovating Mount Olive. His creative flair revealed itself and provided a spectacular blank canvas from which to work. We combined a simple but stylish, luxury palate with comfort and elegance, and we are so happy with what has transpired.
It was a liberating challenge that we both embraced and as the vision unfolded, together we were able to express our love of building and design and Mount Olive was brought to life. We are so pleased to be able to share it with our guests.
Why did you choose Daylesford as the location for your holiday home?
Jamie and I are both locals, having lived in Daylesford our whole lives. Daylesford is such a gorgeous part of the world and we wanted to create something that captured what Daylesford means to us; family, friends and happy memories!
What is your favourite part of your property?
As a family, we all have our own favourite part of the property. Jamie and I love sitting out on the deck with a nice cold beverage, taking in the view of Doctors Gully and watching the kids play on the lawn. The BBQ is Jamie’s domain. The kitchen is a joy to cook in with bi-fold windows opening to the deck, making for easy preparation and serving.
In the winter we love the feel of the open fire and snuggling up on the couch with a nice glass of wine, a good book or movie. With TV’s in each bedroom, the kids are able to escape to their own space too.
What sort of experience do you want your guests to have when staying at Mount Olive?
When guests arrive at Mount Olive we want them to feel the weight of the world lift off their shoulders and to relax into the beautiful space that awaits. Once they step down onto the back deck, the landscape and views of Doctors Gully will entice them to slow down, to surrender to the environment and feel relaxed and at ease.
Do you have any favourite places to eat & drink that you would like to share with your guests?
If you prefer to eat out rather than in-house, Daylesford has so many beautiful restaurants, cafés and great coffee. For something extra special (and also a fantastic wedding venue!) you can’t go past Sault Restaurant. It’s not just the scrumptious food; the amazing views gazing out to the lavender field are spectacular! It truly is a unique venue.
We always enjoy an evening meal at The Farmers Arms or Koukla, where you can also try their breakfast and lunch menu along with Cliffy’s Emporium or the Larder.
Do you have a favourite hamlet or village to visit near Daylesford?
Every hamlet or village surrounding Daylesford has its own unique appeal. We suggest that you take plenty of time to visit each village as there is so much to explore! Glenlyon is probably one of our favourites with a quaint tree lined, Main street that starts with the must visit, ‘Adsum Farmhouse’ on the left as you enter the township and then leads to the Glenlyon General Store for a light lunch or breakfast. Stop in and say hello to the locals, they will always share their intimate knowledge of the area, you won’t be disappointed.
If you were to create an itinerary for a perfect weekend stay in Daylesford, from check in to check out, what would this include?
Take a wander around Lake Daylesford followed by lunch at The Boathouse
If you’re a fan of horses, you must go for a ride with Hepburn Lagoon Trail Rides and only a little further down the road you’ll find Maze House which has lots of activities to keep the kids busy.
Visit The Mill Market which is absolutely brimming with antiques and collectables. Be careful or you may never come out of there!
Finish up with a visit to the Convent Gallery for a stunning meal and a meander through the gallery and history of an iconic Daylesford building.
