Tell us something about your property. What style of property is it?
The French House is a custom-built luxury country home with a distinctive French-provincial style.
What was your inspiration when creating your holiday home?
Having spent over a year living in France, and holidaying there regularly, we are devoted francophiles! Once we had a family we soon realised a 24-hour transit with two small children was no longer viable – we needed to escape from our busy city lives and be able to unwind on a much more regular basis so we decided we needed to bring a taste of French-provincial living closer to home.
Why did you choose this region as the location for your holiday home?
At only an hour from our home in Melbourne, Trentham was the perfect hamlet town for our country escape!
What is the story behind the name of your property?
The French House – it’s our salute to everything we love about country living in France.
What is your favourite part of the property?
We love the open plan living area with its reclaimed timber beams, rustic oak floors and farmhouse kitchen. It’s perfect for entertaining our family and friends.
What sort of experience do you want your guests to have when staying at your property?
Our house motto is: Relax. Rejuvenate. Reconnect.
What is your favourite time of the year to visit the region and why?
We love autumn. The colours on display are simply beautiful and it’s the perfect weather for curling up in front of the fire with a glass of wine!
What do you think is special about this region?
Where do I begin? The food, the wine, the rolling hills, the mineral springs, the walking trails, the diversity of people. And the fact that it is just over an hour from Melbourne makes it a winner for busy city people wanting an escape.
Do you have a favourite village or hamlet to visit near Daylesford and what do you like about it?
Trentham, home of The French House, of course! We also love Piper Street, Kyneton for its antique stores and great cafes.
What are your top tips for places to eat and things to do in the region?
If you were to create an itinerary for a perfect weekend stay in the region, from check in to check out, what would this include?
Take it easy and make check-in night a relaxing one by bringing along provisions for a charcuterie platter and fine wine by the fire. The next morning, stroll into town and grab a coffee and breakfast at the Trentham Collective. Head to Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa for an indulgent treatment and then kick back at the Daylesford Cidery for an afternoon of lawn games, woodfired pizza and cider. Pick up some BBQ supplies and head back to the house for a few sets of tennis to work up your appetite. Eat alfresco under the pergola, overlooking the parterre garden and pinot vines. Retire at your hour of choice, remembering to close up the window shutters for a blackout sleep-in! Next day, get some fresh air with a stroll through the wombat forest at the end of the street. Explore any local Sunday markets to pick yourself up some fresh local produce or vintage pieces. Go home feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and reconnected!
Do you have anything else you would like to tell us about your property?
Guests say they feel transported to regional France the moment they pull up the driveway. We have paid careful attention to detail throughout the property’s design and finishes so that the experience is of the highest quality.
What Guests are Saying about The French House
We loved the house and location. It is well styled and the tennis court and spa are great! We stayed at the house to have a weekend of relaxation and enjoy some French food and wine. We found Trentham a quieter alternative to Daylesford and this house is perfect for two families or 4 couples.

We went away with 4 couples and loved that the house is perfectly suited to that combination, it can be so hard to find a nice place to stay that has 4 x king beds! The facilities and interior design are lovely. Location is great! Thank you for the champagne and other treats!
Julie – July 2017
Perfect location in a quiet yet happening town. Very comfortable indoors for our family of five and we enjoyed a hit of tennis and a soak in the outdoor jacuzzi. A pleasant change from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne with plenty of walks and good places to eat in town and nearby. We will visit again.
